BED & BREAKFAST
Bed and breakfast are
available in the farmhouse. The accommodation is just half a
mile from Bruton in Somerset, 6 miles from the Bath &
West showground at Shepton Mallet, and 5 miles from the Wincanton racecourse.
The rooms have been awarded Four
Stars in the assessment scheme by VisitBritain, and the
inspector added that the breakfasts are Five Star.
|
| "The most wonderful
stay. A beautiful place to relax, and absolutely
everything we needed - heated blanket great!
Looking round the mill was fabulous and the photo walks
really fun. Breakfast perfect." |
|
 |
The rooms are smoke-free, have
tea-making facilities, complimentary sherry and nibbles,
television, central heating, and internet access from our
wireless network. Children of 12 and over are
welcome. No pets. The cost is £45 per night for the
single room, and £90 for the doubles. Details
of special offer of 25% off near the bottom of this page, by the
vacancy chart.
The rooms
are available all the year round apart from Christmas week, when
the family come and stay.

Make a gift of a couple of days B&B to someone special with
a presentation gift voucher.
|
| "We
were given a gift voucher for two nights as a wedding
present. It was a wonderful idea and proved to be a
very relaxing getaway from our busy lives as nurses and
parents. We were met by friendly faces who were only
too happy to help us settle in. The accommodation
was comfortable and clean and the breakfasts were
delicious! A big thank you to our bridesmaids for
the voucher and to Alison and Brian for a lovely
stay." |

THE CHOCOLATE ROOM (the Bridal Suite on wedding days)

|
The Chocolate Room has
a romantic cream lacy four poster double bed, made up with
chocolate satin sheets, deliciously silky to feel. A snow
leopard throw at the end of the bed adds to the tactile
experience. (Note: no Asian cat was harmed in the making
of this bed.) It has an antique brass and iron bedhead that has
been in the family for generations, as has the chest of drawers
and wardrobe. There is plenty of room for the armchair and
old rocking chair as it is very spacious - over 18 ft by 14 ft
(5.5 x 4.3m) with the ensuite shower room in the corner. |
The view from the
window is of the watermill, and the wall round the millpool,
with the big old willow growing on an island in the millpool.
If you leave the double-glazed window open, you can wake to the
sound of the waterfall in the millpool. This picture was
taken in July. |
 |
THE
BLACKBERRY ROOM
|
The Blackberry Room has a cream lacy four poster double bed,
made up with blackberry-coloured sheets, a snow leopard throw,
crushed petal cream cushions and sparkling beaded purple
cushions, together with an antique brass and iron bedhead handed
down in the family. On the walls are watercolours of
the house, cottage and garden by a local artist, and above the
little Victorian fireplace is a collection of lovely old floral
plates. The jug and basin on the dressing table are purely
decorative - there is an ensuite shower room. There are two
armchairs in this generously proportioned room, which is around
15 ft square (4.6 m) with the ensuite shower room in the corner.
|
| The view from the
window is of the whole flower garden, and behind it the trees
that line the riverbank, and the hill on the other side of the
valley. This picture was taken in July. |

|
| "Excellent
accommodation & location. Even meal list very
helpful. Could not do enough for us.
Undoubtedly one of the best we've stayed in." |

A
LITTLE BIT OF MAGIC (see
right)
You don't have to be on your honeymoon to enjoy our stargazer
beds, one in each double room.
Titanias and Oberons
of all ages can treat themselves to a little bit of magic.

THE
ROSE ROOM

|
The Rose Single Room
is charmingly decorated with antique furniture, a handbasin, and
antique lace, with a view from the window of the mill and
millpool. The room has a private bathroom with shower over
the bath, not shared with anyone else. Unlike the new
ensuite facilities in the other rooms, this rare retro-chic
bathroom has a preservation order on it (imposed by Brian, who
says it is immaculate and fully functional, and av....o is a
perfectly good colour.) |
|
Growing below the window is the pink moss rose brought here by
Brian's parents in 1949 as a reminder of their old home near
Ludlow. The view is of the mill and millpool wall. |
|
THE
BREAKFAST ROOM
The Breakfast Room (pictured at the top of this page) has a huge table, built to fit the room in
the 19th century, when the family had 11 children (we have their
photo). There is also an old butter churn, which Brian remembers
his mother using in his childhood to turn surplus cream from the
family cow into butter.
Breakfasts start with the apple juice we personally recommend,
made from Coxes and Bramleys, from a local Somerset orchard, or
orange juice. Then a choice of cereals, followed by either a
traditional English cooked breakfast or a choice of six other
dishes, some for the health-conscious, some blatantly
self-indulgent, some you haven't had for years, and some you've
never had. The cooked breakfast includes dry cure bacon from a
local free-range rare breed farm, sausages made with herbs and
pork from the same farm, free-range local eggs, mushrooms and
our own tomatoes in season. Vegetarian sausages are also
available. To finish - toast and English butter, jam
or home-made Seville orange marmalade. After years of making it
runny but tasty, Alison has now hit marmalade perfection
(thanks, Delia). |
|
| "Between
your breakfasts and the local pub and restaurant, this
is the best food we've had in the UK." (American
guests) |

For VACANCIES,
see the chart below on this webpage.
Visitors are welcome to explore the riverside walks, and to
wander the 65 acres of the farm. The small Saxon town of
Bruton is just three minutes away by car, and offers a 15C
church, almshouses and quaint alleyways. There is a huge
variety of things to do without travelling far, and a different
excellent place to eat for every night of the week. See
the link at the top of this page to the "Places to visit"
web page. |
|
"Thank
you for a most enjoyable stay with you. It exceeded our
expectations. The food, accommodation and attention to
details were excellent - as was the quiet but
professional way you both run the premises. We
loved the setting and gardens - more impressive knowing
the attention and hard work over the years that has gone
into it from you both. We also loved the cats and sheep
and your set walks. It is a great base for touring . You
have a highly recommended business and home." |
|
| "You
have thought of absolutely every detail and then
some. We normally only ask for a comfy bed and a good
breakfast, but we have come across far less attention to
detail elsewhere!"
|
| "What
a wonderful place! The setting is perfect, the
rooms are fabulous and the breakfast alone is worth the
4 hour drive. Little touches such as the
'nightcap' in the rooms and fresh milk on the landing
make it perfect for guests. Well done!"
